The Effects of Alcohol Consumption During Pregnancy

It is a fact that alcohol consumption during pregnancy is completely barred. It is not a safe time to consume alcohol obviously, but specifically it is quoted that during the tenure of pregnancy, females should not consume alcohol at all which also includes the consumption of beer and wines. The Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre in Mumbai and the Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre in India thus explains that the mother’s blood indeed passes through the baby’s umbilical cord which can thus lead towards the cause of stillbirth, miscarriage and also bringing a string of behavioural, physical and intellectual disabailities on the run, which are also known as the ‘Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders’, where children mainly surviving with FAS also have the tendency to have the following strings of issue. They are as follows:
  • Cause of abnormal facial feature, specifically in the smooth ridge going between the nose and the upper lips which is also known as the philtrum.
  • Birth with a small head size and height shorter than the average height of human beings
  • Having a poor coordination and also surviving with a hyperactive behaviour
  • Difficulty in focusing and maintaining attention with poor memory issues
  • Difficulty in learning and having speech and language issues too with an intellectual disability or low IQ issue
  • Having poor reasoning and judgement skills with survival of sleep issues and milk consumption problems in the toddler phase
  • Having vision issues and hearing problems
  • Rising issues of heart, bones and kidneys

The Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre in India states that alcohol has the ability to cause problems for the baby throughout their pregnancy period, and also at the time when the woman does not even know if she is pregnant or not. Also, during the first three months of pregnancy the stage of facial features are in the development stage. Therefore, due to the consumption of alcohol, the growth of facial features with the central nervous system can be at a caseous stage and also the brain of the infant  can also be affected at any time possible during the pregnancy and the ovulation period too. Thus, stopping the consumption of alcohol would lead towards the baby’s well-being and active health. Some of the major problems are as follows:

  • The occurrence of premature birth could take place where the baby can be born before 37 weeks of pregnancy which can also lead towards serious health issues and also later in life.
  • Problems caused in the brain which can lead towards setting barriers in growth and development.
  • The baby is also likely to get heart defects and hearing issues with vision problems. Complications during birth is also a major issue as it can change the functionality of any body part which can also affect the overall health issue and development of the individual and the working of the body as well.
